 BRAND STORY
 MAKE HISTORY
When J.W. McCulloch opened a distillery in Owensboro, Kentucky, in 1885, he didn’t set out to make history. He just wanted to make a damn good bourbon.
He named it Green River after the banks where he honed his craft, and word of his “whiskey without regrets” spread fast—faster than the horses who carried it to market. Before long, there wasn’t a man or woman alive without a bottle in their pantry and high praise on their lips. One man even traded his share of a gold mine for just 20 barrels—a price, no doubt, anyone who’d ever tasted Green River could justify.
Within a few short years, the Green River name had become synonymous with quality, purity, and good taste. Turns out when you pour focus and effort into doing what you love, history is happy to make itself.
But in the summer of 1918, two years before the fall of Prohibition, fire broke out on the distillery grounds. In just three hours, every building of big concern—along with 43,000 barrels of Kentucky’s finest bourbon—was reduced to piles of ash.
The distillery would be rebuilt in 1936, but J.W. McCulloch wouldn’t live to see it.
In the decades that followed, the brand and facility passed in and out of operation before falling into disrepair. They were almost lost forever.
But in 2014, both the name and distillery found themselves in the possession of a group of history lovers and bourbon buffs determined to bring the
whiskey without regrets back home. Not long after, Green River was reborn.
Today, the historic rickhouses at the Green River Distilling Company are stacked to the brim. The distillery, restored to its former glory, is flowing with Green River Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey, a glowing, amber example of Kentucky
craftsmanship.
It’s a rounder, smoother, higher rye bourbon whiskey made with corn grown in the same Kentucky countryside and the same limestone-filtered water that J.W. McCulloch used in his own secret recipe, aged at least four years under the same warm Kentucky sun.
It’s inspired by J.W. McCulloch’s incomparable craftsmanship and meticulous attention to detail (and for a lot less than the gold mine it’s worth).
We make history every day for you to enjoy every day—and then make a little history of your own.
