won the National Small Press Book Award as “Best Erotic Book
1998.” This is author Fritscher’s 12 book. In total, his books have

sold more than 100,000 copies, and his name recognition is high
from many years of publication in more than 25 gay magazines,
and as founding San Franciso editor in chief of Drummer maga-
zine. He is known for his biographical memoir of his life with his
lover Robert Mapplethorpe, Mapple thorpe: Assault with a Deadly
Camera, and for his epic novel, Some Dance to Remember, which
The New Republic called a classic comparable to Gore Vidal and
James Baldwin. His encyclopedia of GLBT history is Gay San
Francisco: Eyewitness Drummer—A Memoir of the Sex, Art, Salon,
Pop Culture War, and Gay History of Drummer Magazine from
the Titanic 1970s to 1999. Gay San Francisco won the National
Leather Association International “Geoff Mains” Award for Best
Non-Fiction Book 2009.
