to give only name, rank, service number and date of birth…knowing
he could only stand so much immobile, suffocating, wrenching,
spasming pain…that I am an American fighting man…one word
in the shadow of this killing pain…responsible for my actions…that
in all this torture, one word from him, one word…one word only,
one word he could never say…dedicated to the princi ples which
made my country free…one word that could stop them…to trust in
God…one word no one a world away would ever, could ever hear
him say…and in the United States of America…one screaming,
broken, thigh-muffled, gagging, pleading yes!
