SVMIC Anesthesiology: Common Risk Issues
FUNDAMENTALS: INTRA-OPERATIVE
Ensure there is detailed documentation reflecting the intra-
operative anesthesia management and patient monitoring
of:
• Emergency response and interventions
• Maneuvers utilized for managing a difficult airway
• Position and padding
• Time-outs
• Presence of an anesthesiologist during key
portions of the procedure
Anesthesia Information Management Systems
Anesthesia Information Management Systems (AIMS)

are in use in many hospitals and facilities. This technology
allows the automatic and reliable collection, storage, and
presentation of patient data during the perioperative period.
They are specialized forms of EHR systems that, in addition
to providing basic record-keeping functions, typically provide
end users with ready access to summary data that can be used
to facilitate quality assurance and research functions. Most
AIMS systems will have an Anesthesia Preoperative Evaluation
System, Anesthesia Consent, an Intraoperative Anesthesia
Recordkeeping System, an Anesthesia Postoperative Evaluation,
and an Administration Web Interface. A typical AIMS installation
will be a hardware/software solution that interfaces with the
intraoperative patient monitors. Increasingly, these systems also
have the ability to read and write data from the main hospital
