SVMIC Risk Reduction Series: Communication
The Challenge of an Adverse Outcome
Even the strongest
physician-patient
relationship faces a
challenge in the event
of an adverse
outcome. If such
occurs, first and
foremost, the
physician should
attend to the patient’s
medical needs. Once
this has been addressed, it is imperative that the matter be
investigated promptly and openly. Express sympathy to the
patient and family for a poor or unexpected outcome without
admitting to, or being guilty of, malpractice. A frank discussion
with the patient and family should include:
• A description of the events, without either accepting or
placing blame
• A sincere acknowledgment of regret for the unfortunate
nature of the event
» It is okay to say I don’t know how this happened,
followed by but I’m going to investigate and get you
some answers
• During the discussion:
» Provide only factual information
Do not speculate on the course of events or causes
of the adverse outcome
