SVMIC Risk Reduction Series: Effective Systems
• Appropriateness of the equipment
• Proper education and training of staff, with documentation
of this training
• Proper use of the equipment
• Proper maintenance and servicing of the equipment,
including inspection and calibration in accordance with
manufacturer’s recommendations
Any discrepancies in equipment function that are observed by
employees should be reported and documented. Malfunctioning
equipment should be removed immediately from service,
tagged, and sent for repair. The equipment should then be
inspected and tested before reuse.
If an employee or patient experiences a serious illness, injury, or
death as a result of any office equipment, this occurrence must
be reported to SVMIC and the FDA immediately.
SVMIC strongly recommends against the importation of
any medical product that has not received FDA approval.
Infection Control
Each practice should ensure that precautions
are taken to protect patients, visitors, and
personnel from infection. Policies and
procedures must be developed and stringently
followed. An infection control program
should be based on current guidelines and
recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention (CDC) and the Occupational Safety and Health
Administration (OSHA).
