Page 3 - Part 1 Collaborating with Advanced Practice Providers - An Overview of State Rules
P. 3
Overview
Patients are demanding greater access to healthcare and recent legislation
puts demands on physicians and other practitioners with regard to
technology, medical record access, privacy, security, patient satisfaction,
value based reimbursement and other measures intended to lower costs
and improve quality and efficiency in the delivery of healthcare. Many
believe these efforts are stressing an already burdened healthcare system,
prompting physicians and medical practices to turn to advanced practice
providers, such as nurse practitioners and physician assistants to alleviate
the pressure, to meet the demands and further quality care.
Utilizing these providers requires an understanding of the often complex
state laws, regulations and professional practice acts which will be broadly
outlined in this course. Additionally, standard of care considerations are also
discussed, and case examples are offered to highlight the accountability of
the physician responsible for supervising and/or collaborating with an APP.
As with most risk mitigation courses, strategies focusing on identifying risk,
tools for effective communication and best practices for documentation are
key elements in developing a risk management plan to work effectively with
APPs.
Course Objectives
Upon completion of this course, participants should be able to:
1. Identify the legal and regulatory responsibilities for physicians
entering into supervisory or collaborative relationships with advanced
practice providers;
2. Recognize risk issues that may lead to an allegation of negligent
supervision by the physician; and
3. List steps to develop protocols and best practices for supervision of
and/or collaboration with advanced practice providers.
