It is also difficult to get a complete picture of the liability
numbers for hospitalists because many are employed by
hospitals that are self-insured. These hospitals often do not
share their claims information, making it difficult to ascertain
accurate numbers relating to the frequency and amounts of paid
claims.
Also, claims and lawsuits typically take a long time to wind their
way through the system before they can be considered “closed
claims”. It may take several years to complete reliable, in-depth
studies which enable us to identify major areas of risk and
confidently predict future claims trends.
