Ramadan was made obligatory in the 9th
month of the Hijra. According to the belief
of the Islamic religion, it is the month
when the verses of the Quran began to be
revealed to the Islamic prophet
Muhammad, and it is also the month when
fasting and tarawih prayers are performed
by Muslims.
In addition, in most Muslim countries,
the month of Ramadan is also known as
the "Sultan of the 11 Months".
The only month mentioned in the Quran
and whose importance is emphasized is
the month of Ramadan. Fasting was made
obligatory for Muslims in the 2nd year of
the Hijra. Immediately after the verses
stating that fasting is obligatory, those
who reach this month are ordered to fast.
The verses on the subject are as follows:
O you who have believed! Fasting is decreed
upon you, as it was decreed upon those
before you, so that you may fear Allah...
— Quran, Surah Al-Baqara, 183
