SIX YEARS OF FORMATION TRANSITION DEACONS INTO LIFE OF SERVICE
BY REV. DEACON MICHAEL LOEFFLER ’97
Cascia Community Celebrates New Deacons
On Saturday, June 17th, six years of formation culminated for ten men of the Diocese of Tulsa as Bishop David
Konderla laid hands upon them and called down the Holy Spirit, ordaining them as deacons. This group included three men from the Cascia Hall community: Deacon B.D.Tidmore is the grandfather of Bradley ’16, Ethan ’18, and Trinity ’19, Deacon Kevin Malarkey is the chair of our theology department, and I am our assistant principal and father of Spencer ’24.
The diaconate has existed as an order of the
clergy since the earliest days of the Church. The rst
seven deacons were chosen and anointed by the
apostles themselves (Acts 6:1-7), and one of them,
St. Stephen, was the rst Christian martyred for his
faith (Acts 7:54-8:1a). St. Paul also writes about the
qualities necessary to become a deacon in his rst letter to Timothy (3:8-13).
Deacons are entrusted with a sharing in all three aspects of their bishop’s ministry: teaching, sanctifying, and governing. In teaching, they proclaim the Gospel and preach at Mass and teach all aspects of the faith. In sanctifying, they perform baptisms, assist at the altar and give Holy Communion at Mass, witness Holy Matrimony, preside over funeral rites, and pray the Liturgy of the Hours daily. In governing, they hold a special role in leading the Church’s activities of charity.
