Conclusion
The results show that the Tlemcen Sloughi is a big-sized sighthound dog, and the dun (sand
black mask) color the most common. Within the observed population, which is generally of
square body shape, there are varieties with much shorter or much longer bodies relative to
the height at the withers.
The authors state the importance of this result. When formulating an official breed standard,
all possible variations of the index of format must be considered. This study shows also that
the differences between the animals is due to their body measurements.
The authors also state that this study was a first step in the characterization of the Western
Algeria’s sighthound; the study’s impact was however limited by the confined sampling area.
They say that extending this approach to additional geographic areas is needed to get a clear
picture of the morphological diversity of the Algerian sighthound (see previous study). And
for additional insight, a study of molecular markers polymorphisms on the genetic diversity
and genetic structure of the Algerian sighthound would be useful.
