Chapter 6 – Confined Space Equipment
TOPICS PRESENTED IN THIS CHAPTER
• Correct use of confined space equipment
• How to inspect and don a personal harness for use in a confined space
• How to safely use a tripod and winch for entry into a confined space
NOTE: Vertical entries over 5 feet require the use of a
mechanical retrieval device to retrieve entrants in the
event of an injury or other emergency.
Other physical hazards associated with confined spaces may
have on a worker due to fear of small spaces
(claustrophobia), or fear of bugs, rodents, snakes, or other
animals, or due to psychological disorders.
Correct Use and Understanding of Equipment
Each safe entry into a confined space requires workers be familiar with the inspection, use and
maintenance of equipment used to maintain worker safety when entering confined spaces.
• Multi-gas monitoring equipment measures atmospheric conditions and alerts entrants
should unsafe conditions be present.
• Harnesses, fall protection and retrieval lines, winches, and other equipment, including
tripods, hoists and davit arms are often necessary for safe entry.
• Personal protective equipment (PPE) will vary depending on risks and specific entry
conditions.
• Temporary traffic control and physical site security are important concerns and must be
adequately planned for and addressed to ensure the safety of operations.
• Emergency response equipment and rescue services equipment must be considered
when preparing to enter confined space. Equipment used in your work will be determined
by the type of work to be performed and the type of confined spaces you must enter.
Applicable Standards for fall Protection: Refer to national standards, including ANSI Z359.1
and ANSI A10.14; and local, state, and federal requirements for more information on personal fall
arrest systems and associated components.
