Back to Education Allowance (BTEA)
• Applicable to people with status
• BTEA provides funding for second and third level education
• You must be over age 21 (over 24 for post-graduate support)
• Normally, you must secure a full-time course place before applying for BTEA - but this does
not apply to Protection Applicants who receive their status mid-course - you can apply for
BTEA after starting your course.
• To receive the allowance for 2nd level education you need to have been in receipt of
qualifying social welfare payments for 3 months (78 days)
• To receive the allowance for 3rd level education you need to have been in receipt of
qualifying social welfare payments for 9 months (234 days)
• The €38 Daily Expense Allowance received while in Direct Provision is considered eligible for
the qualifying period, as is JobSeekers Allowance.

Back to Education Initiative (BTEI)
• Applicable to people holding Labour Market Access Permission (Work Permit)
• Applicable to people with status
• Part-time courses for over 16s who have not completed a Leaving Certificate
• BTEI courses are usually QQI level 3 & 4, but it is possible to obtain QQI level 5 & 6
• You must be in receipt of specified social welfare payments or work permit
• Priority is given to the most educationally disadvantaged
• You can also take part in BTEI if you are working and on a low income
