              Where the C&O Canal, the western Potomac River, and
              major roads and railroads converged, Allegany County
              connected the western region of America to the eastern
              seaboard. Our story of America's early transporta on
              milestones is told in our rivers, rails, trails, mountains, and
              towns. Home to the final stop on the C&O Canal, Mile
              Marker “0” for the Na onal Road, and a major crossroad
              for railroad connec on and development, Allegany County
              served the industrial revolu on as an epicenter for
              expor ng natural resources such as coal, ore, and  mber.
              Pre industrial revolu on, the county’s topography lended
              itself as a natural passageway for westward explora on.
