HISTORY COMES ALIVE
Where the C&O Canal, the western Potomac River, and
major roads and railroads converged, Allegany County
connected the western region of America to the eastern
seaboard. Our story of America's early transporta on
milestones is told in our rivers, rails, trails, mountains, and
towns. Home to the final stop on the C&O Canal, Mile
Marker “0” for the Na onal Road, and a major crossroad
for railroad connec on and development, Allegany County
served the industrial revolu on as an epicenter for
expor ng natural resources such as coal, ore, and mber.
Pre industrial revolu on, the county’s topography lended
itself as a natural passageway for westward explora on.
Be transported back in me with a ride on the Western
Maryland Scenic Railroad, aboard one of the largest steam
locomo ves of its kind in the world. Grab an historic
walking tour map to explore our downtowns and the
histories our buildings hold. Learn of George Washington’s
me in Cumberland along the George Washington Trail
1753. Our museums and a rac ons take you on a journey
through three centuries of early American history and how
Allegany County played an important role in the
development of our country.
