carefully at what you will leave behind by retiring at 25 years of service and make sure you understand how much
money you will leave behind by not working those additional five years.
NC State FOP Biennial Conference
It is hard to believe that it is almost time for the 2018 North Carolina State Lodge Biennial FOP Conference.
Another two years have passed quickly and soon we will gather in Charlotte to meet and further the agenda of the
North Carolina Fraternal Order of Police. I would personally like to thank all the Brothers and Sisters who have
served on our Board of Directors over the past two years. Without you we would not be growing our membership
and providing all of the valuable services our members need and deserve. There will be other articles in this issue
regarding the Fall Board of Directors meeting and State Conference. I encourage all NCFOP members to try to
attend some portion of these three days of meetings. Remember, all you need to get in the door is your 2018 FOP
membership card. In order to vote on motions, resolutions and in the election you must be a registered delegate
from your lodge but ALL FOP members are welcome and encouraged to attend. These meetings will be held at
Spring Hill Suites by Marriott, 311 E.5th Street in Charlotte. The zip code is 28202.

May’s Memorial Services
By Terry Mangum - Immediate Past President
May is always a very active month with Memorial Services on the local, state, and
national levels. I was fortunate enough to be able to attend two of the services this year. I
feel that attending these services is the least I can do to honor and remember our fallen
heroes.
First I attended Durham County Lodge 2’s 32nd Annual Peace Officers Memorial Ser-
vice which was held at Grey Stone Baptist Church in Durham. I have prepared another
article in this issue with a description of this service. Terry Mangum
On May 13 I rode with President Randy Hagler, National Trustee Dennis McCrary,
Immediate Past President
and Chaplain Phil Wiggins to Washington DC for the Police Week activities. We attended
the 30th Annual Candlelight Vigil and the 37th Annual National Peace Officers’ Memorial Service on May 15.
This year’s Memorial Service was well attended by President Donald Trump’s Administration. President Trump
was the Keynote Speaker. During his remarks, President Trump once again acknowledged Chaplain Phil Wiggins
by name. Vice President Pence also gave remarks. This is the second year in a row to have both the President and
Vice President attend this service. Also in attendance were Attorney General Jeff Sessions, Speaker of the House
Paul Ryan, and several Secretaries, Senators and Representatives.
The National Anthem was sung by Sergeant Christopher Wilburn of the Indianapolis Indiana Police Department.
National Recording Artists Branch and Dean performed the song “The Dash.” Branch and Dean remained on site
for the entire service. For those who attended the National Biennial Conference in Nashville, they performed at the
special gathering held for the delegates. Another song, “Not A Day Goes By,” was performed by Senior Patrolman
Dustin Dierenfeldt of the Kansas City Kansas Police Department. The final song, at the conclusion of the service,
was sung by Ginny Woolridge of the Fraternal Order of Police Auxiliary. Her song was “I’ll Stand by You.”
