   CROSS COUNTRY RECAP
    VARSITY CROSS COUNTRY
Adversity comes in many different forms, and the Hawks fought through a few of them to put up strong team and individual finishes in the 2021 NCISAA 4A State Championship on Friday, October 29.
The defending-champion girls’ team stuck to its tried-and-true formula of working together as a pack to claim a third place finish. The Hawks were led by senior Mary Schleusner, who dropped 14 seconds off her personal record (PR) to place seventh in 19:00.2, earning her All-State honors for a fourth-consecutive year. Fellow senior Madeleine Pease had the race of her career, cutting more than 40 seconds off of her PR to finish tenth in 19:31.1 and earn All-State honors for the first time. Junior Mary Cate Kiser came next, with a big PR of her own, dropping 30+ seconds to finish fourteenth in 19:38.2. Freshman Maggie Klingman came in 21st in a time of 20:37.0, and junior Helen Hurden finished 25th in 20:58.4 to round out the scoring for the Hawks. Sophomore Lucy Ratterree and freshman Bridget Yu also contribut- ed to the team effort and gained valuable experience in state competition that will serve them well next year.
MIDDLE SCHOOL CROSS COUNTRY
The middle school and varsity cross country teams competed in their respective conference championships October 19th at McAlpine Creek Park and came away with numerous personal and seasonal best times.
Six out of ten middle school girls and four out of nine middle school boys achieved their personal best times, some with significant drops. Although the team scores fell at the bottom of the Greater Charlotte Middle School Athletic Association (GCMSAA) Championship results, this young team of predominantly 7th grade students is well-positioned to be a force to reckon with next year.
