INTERNATIONAL TRADE
Lumsden Design Ltd
LUMSDEN is a design business based in London that specialises in creating shops for museums, galleries and visitor attractions that generate signi cant revenue and grow pro ts.
With clients including Museum of Modern
Art NYC, Warner Bros., The British Museum and National Theatre, Lumsden has won the Queen’s Award for International Trade for outstanding short term growth. It has seen its overseas sales almost triple in just three years.
Founded by designer Callum Lumsden and his business partner Simon Clark in 2010 Lumsden prides itself on creating memorable and exciting shops that create both revenue and reputation for its clients.
“Retail is really important to the cultural world,” explains Lumsden. “Museums, galleries, theatres, opera houses and visitor attractions all have to generate revenue. We see ourselves as enhancing the aesthetics, as well as the nancial gains, for those institutions.”
The company’s breakthrough project in 2011 was the Harry Potter shop at Warner Bros. Studio Tour London – The Making of Harry Potter. This has been followed by shops at King’s Cross Station’s Platform 93⁄4, the theatre production
Boutique at National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa.
Harry Potter and the Cursed Child and most recently the Harry Potter Shop in Heathrow Airport’s Terminal 5.
Lumsden has successfully exported its British design knowhow overseas – creating shops for Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) NYC, Universal Studios, Warner Bros. in California, National Gallery of Canada, Vienna’s Belvedere and Moscow’s Museum of Cosmonautics, to name a few.
In the UK Lumsden’s team has since designed shops for the Whitworth Gallery in Manchester, Abbey Road Studios, London’s Royal National Theatre and six innovative retail spaces for the British Museum. They have recently created a shop for The Henry Moore Foundation’s new facilities and a unique pop-up for Glyndebourne Opera Festival.
They are currently working on Zeitz MOCAA, Africa’s rst dedicated contemporary art museum which opens in Cape Town, South Africa in

Autumn 2017. In addition are two new museum shops for MoMA, New York as part of its current redevelopment and a standalone MoMA Design Store in Kyoto, Japan.
Lumsden’s philosophy on good client relationships is straightforward. “We continually strive to deliver inspiring projects on time and in budget,” said Callum. “We also prove a return on investment by tying the work to a measurable, hard metric to quantify the e ectiveness of our designs.”
The nine-strong team are based in a studio in Farringdon, a historic part of the City of London. Lumsden and Clark are proud of their team’s dedication and talent. They are all encouraged
to contribute to projects and to decisions about the business. They are rm believers in nurturing talent from within the business – two former junior designers are now associate directors having risen

through the internal ranks.
Callum said: “Winning the Queen’s Award
is recognition that a small company has had a big impact by reaching out into lots of di erent countries. Our designs have a very tangible impact, providing a valuable return on the investment made by our clients, while being creative and inspiring aesthetically.
“I see rst-hand in foreign cities how much recognition and respect the rest of the world has for British design. We’re very proud to be an ambassador for that.”
