Baum was also very supportive of the women’s rights movement, being the secretary of Aberdeen’s Woman’s Suffrage Club, which you can see this in many of his Oz books. One example is the second oz book, “The Marvelous land of oz”. in it, General Jinjur, a girl, leads many of the women of oz to revolt, armed only with knitting needles, and they succeed, forcing the men to do the household chores. Though Jinjur does not end up ruling, another girl, ozma, the rightful ruler, is also a big supporter of gender equality.
When he was in his 30s, he decided to move his family to the aberdeen, where he thought there were more opportunities. he worked in different jobs, such as running a bazaar, reporting for a newspaper, starting a baseball club and working for a department store. it was until his 40s that he really concentrated on his writing. He finished The Wizard of Oz in 1898, and it was published two years later. it quickly became a best-seller; everybody loved the funny, clever and colorful characters.
he ended up writing 14 oz books, along with several other fantasy books and plays. he called himself “the royal historian of oz”, and said that he wanted his books to be like modernized fairy tales, only without the sadness and horrors that most fairy tales have.
