5. Writing Workshop Writing a Summary
a summary is a synopsis of something you have read or seen.
In a summary, you use your own words to express the main idea and the most
important details of what you read or seen.
Next, you will write a summary of “The Girl Who Owned a Bear” by L. Frank Baum using the writing process.
PREWRITING
Start by writing the title and author of the story.
To write a good summary you have to be sure you understood what you read. read it several times before starting your summary.
read the story again and take notes of important details.
The purpose of a summary is to give a condensed version of what you read using
your own words, not rewriting the original version.
ask yourself who?, what?, where?, when?, why?, how? Write the answers to these
questions.
remember your opinion should not appear in the summary.
