                                                                           110
Native Americans are the indige- nous habitants who have been living in America since before Europeans ar- rived. Most anthropologists believe that they were descendents of migrants from Siberia that got to what is now known as America through the Bering Strait around 12,000 years ago.
Natives were mistakenly called In- dians by Christopher Columbus who thought he had arrived to the Indies in Asia.
Native Americans were very close to nature; they had an enormous respect for the land. They were very skillful in using all the natural resources they had. They were excellent fishermen, farmers, and hunters. They were di- vided in different tribes.
When the colonists from Europe ar- rived in the 16th and 17th century they were greeted with enthusiasm and re- spect.
