 WrItInG WorKshop. Writing a Summary.
Next, you will write a summary of Rikki-Tikki-Tavi by Rudyard Kipling, using the writing process.
 • A summary is a synopsis of something you have read or seen.
• In a summary you use your own words to express the main idea
and the most important details.
      PREWRITING
rememBer
1. Start by writing the title and author of the story.
2. To be able to write a good summary you have to understand
what you read. If necessary, read it again.
3. Remember that your purpose is to give a condensed version
of what you read in your own words not rewriting the original
version.
4. Ask yourself who? what? where? when? why? how? Write notes
with the answers.
5. Read the story again but this time take notes of important
details.
6. Y our opinions should not appear in the summary .
WRITING
1. Start by writing the author’s name and title of the story.
2. Write the main idea of the story.
3. Write the details that you chose in your own words. This will be
the body of the summary.
4. It is helpful to write transition words like then, however and also. 5. Finish with a strong sentence.
