The passive voice is always a verb phrase that consists of a form of the verb be and the past participle of a verb.
The passive voice should be used sparingly. Use the passive voice:
a) When you want to emphasize the receiver of the action.
Example:
The mayor was elected by the landslide.
b) When you do not know, or do not want to reveal, the performer of the action.
Example
Vicious rumors have been spread about the politician.
Language. Underline the verb in each of the following sentences, and then identify the verb as active or passive.
1. Mathilda wanted a beautiful dress for the party.
2. The necklace was lost at the party by Mathilda.
3. Madame Forestier lent Mathilda her diamond necklace.
4. A beautiful dress was bought by Mathilda.
5. Mathilda´s husband gave her money.
6. The party was the best party ever for Mathilda.
7. Mathilda wore a dress and the diamond necklace for the party .
8. The girl was one of those pretty and charming young creatures.
9. The round table was covered by a silk tablecloth.
10. Madame Forestier went to a wardrobe with a mirror.
