A participial phrase consists of a participle and all the words related to the participle.
Participial phrases are used as adjectives.
Examples
Midas, gazing at the flower garden, wishes good fortune for his daughter and himself.
The participial phrase modifies the noun Midas.
Marygold was a beautiful prepared young lady. The participial phrase modifies the noun Marygold.
A gerund phrase consists of a gerund and all the words related to the gerund. Gerund phrases are used as subjects, predicate nominatives, direct objects, indirect objects, and object of prepositions.
Examples
Wishing for fortune was Midas´s pastime.
The participial phrase wishing for fortune is used as a subject.
She didn´t like eating in the dining room.
The participial phrase eating in the dining room is used as a direct object.
The best part of the story was turning everything into gold.
The participial phrase turning everything into gold is used as a predicate nominative.
After waiting for many years, Midas had all the gold he desired.
The participial phrase waiting for many years is the object of the preposition after.
