About the Author. Henry Van Dyke
The story you just read was written by an American author, educator and clergyman named Henry Van Dyke. He was born on November 10, 1852, in Germantown Pennsylvania. His father was a Presbyterian minister.
He received his B.A. from Princeton University and in 1879 following his father´s footsteps joined the Presbyterian ministry.
He married Ellen Reid in 1881 and had nine children. Two years later, he became the pastor of a well known Presbyterian Church in New York City gaining national reputation as a great preacher.
He wrote his first book “The Reality of Religion” in 1884. In 1900 he became a Professor of English Literature in his alma mater Princeton University.
One of Van Dyke´s most popular stories is “The Story of the Other Wise Man” written in 1896 where the author adds a fourth Magus, Artaban, to the well known Bible story of the three Wise Men.
In the early 1900´s he became a lecturer at the University of Paris. Later President Woodrow Wilson, who was a former classmate, appointed him as the ambassador to the Netherlands and Luxembourg. Soon after, World War I began and Holland was considered a place of refuge, he had the opportunity to serve his country by helping the refugees, during those difficult times.
When he resigned as ambassador he returned to the United States and continued teaching.
Henry Van Dyke died on April 10, 1933 at his home in Princeton, New Jersey. He is considered a great writer, minister and educator.
