bacteria free! He continued doing research and experimenting with it, even proving that it could prevent the staphylococci to grow. He named it this active substance penicillin. He used to say, “One sometimes finds what one is not looking for.”
Sir Alexander Fleming Ernst Boris Chain Sir Howard Walter Florey (1881-1955) (1906-1979) (1898-1968)
However, since that amazing substance was difficult to produce, penicillin was not used until many years later when two other scientists Howard Florey and Ernst Chain, continued with Fleming´s work, finding a way to extract the penicillin. They later found a way to mass produce it.
In 1945, the three scientists Fleming, Florey, and Chain were awarded the Nobel Prize, “for the discovery of penicillin and its curative effect in various infectious diseases."
Even with new discoveries, penicillin is still one of the most used antibiotics, saving millions of lives.
In 1944, Fleming was knighted, which meant from that moment on people should call him Sir Alexander Fleming.
Fleming died in 1955 from a heart attack.
