18. What excuse does the princess have for not wanting to marry the servant?
She feels that he is not her equal in birth. Not of her class.
19. What new challenge does she present for the young servant? Who helps him?
She strews ten sacks of millet-seeds all over the garden floor and admonishes “To-morrow morning before sunrise these must be picked up and not a single grain be wanting.”
20. Do you think it is fair that the princess keeps coming up with new challenges for the young servant? Explain. What would you have done in his place?
Answers vary. Students might say that the princess was very unfair with the young man and that they would probably had given up because she had proven herself unworthy of his risk- ing his life for her.
21. What was the last task the princess commanded on the servant? Who helps him?
He must get a golden apple from the tree of life. The young ravens that are now grown up help him.
22. What happened to the princess after she ate a slice of the golden apple?
Her heart was immediately filled with love for the young servant.
