Answers vary. Students might say that he didn’t have to kill the duck; he could have waited for the duck to digest the ring and then looked for it in the remains.
9. When the king tried to make amends to the servant, what did the servant ask for?
He asked for a horse and some money for traveling, as he had a mind to see the world and go about a little.
10. Do you think the servant really merits being described as having a kind heart for saving a couple of fish? What about his actions with the duck? Elaborate.
Answers vary. Students might say that he didn’t merit being described as having a kind heart because he was quick to sacrifice the duck for his own benefit and saving the fish was just a casual act.
11. What was the ant-king’s complaint to the servant?
Why cannot folks, with their clumsy beasts, keep off our bodies? That gargantuan horse, with his heavy hoofs, has been treading down my people without mercy!
