Diego Velázquez
(1599-1660)
Diego Velázquez was born in Spain in1599. It has been said that he knew he wanted to be a painter since he was eleven years old. He began studying with Francisco Herrera, the founder of the Seville School. After that he became a student of a famous painter called Francisco Pacheco in Seville. He later married Pacheco’s daughter.
In 1623, while living in Madrid, he became the leading painter for King Phillip IV. This was a great honor for painters. His job was to paint portraits of royalty. It was an incredible job; he even
got to live in the castle with his family for the next twenty years.
He had the wonderful opportunity to go to Italy and study with the most amazing painters. One time in Rome he even made a portrait of the Pope.
