One of his most famous paintings is “Las Meninas” (The Maids of Honour). It is supposed to be a portrait of Infanta Margaret Theresa, the king’s daughter, surrounded by her servants, but look at it carefully.
Can you find Velázquez? How about the King and Queen?
Velázquez paints himself painting the Queen and King. The Queen and King are reflected in the mirror on the back.
People have been fascinated by this picture for centuries. You can see it in the Museo Del Prado in Madrid, Spain.
  Picasso was one of many painters who admired Velázquez, he even drew his own version of Las Meninas.
In 1659 they gave Velázquez the highest honor a painter could receive, the cross of Santiago.
Diego Velázquez died on August 6th, 1660.
