Jan Van Riebeeck in representation of the Dutch establishes an important port named Cape Town, on a Commission for the Dutch-East India trading company. The African people were still independent.
1807
Promulgation of the Abolition of the Slave Trade Act in Britain.
1860’s
The British took control of Cape Town.
1867
Diamonds are discovered.
1880
The city became rich by large gold discoveries.
1910

          South Africa becomes an independent nation forming Union of South Africa.
1912
The African National Congress is formed, its main objective is to bring all Africans together as one people and to defend their rights and freedom.
1918
Rolihlahla Mandela is born on July 18, in a small village called Mveso. A teacher later gave him the English name Nelson.
      1945
South Africa became a charter member of the United Nations.
1948
Apartheid is introduced. Laws legally and physically separate different racial groups.
