In 1508 he was asked by Pope Julius II
to paint the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel (a chapel in the Vatican). This was a challenge for Michelangelo because he considered himself a sculptor, not a painter, but he was up to the challenge, especially because he could not say no to the pope.
This job was very difficult because he had to build special platforms to reach the ceiling. Sometimes he had to paint lying on his back. He divided the ceiling in sections, painting stories from the bible on each one.

Before he turned 25 he had finished one of his most famous sculptures “The Pieta” which to this day it stands in its original place Saint Peter’s Basilica. In this beautiful life size sculpture you will see a young Mary holding Jesus Christ on her lap.
Later some of his masterpieces reflected his knowledge of the human body, such as his sculpture known as David which for him was an example of heroic courage. Just imagine this incredible 4.34 m. high sculpture. It has been said that for him every stone was a future sculpture.
