Coast Guard World War Memorial
“Lest we forget”
The Memorial is both symbolical and historical in character. The foundation and pyramid are suggestive of rocks standing in the sea along the coast, or marks of dangers to navigation, and represent the Service ideals of steadfastness and endurance. The sea gull is a graceful emblem of the watchful and untiring spirit of the Coast Guard and is poised as alighting from an arrested flight. The seal of the Service with its motto “Semper Paratus” is carved on the monument and on the base is the quotation, “Thy Way is in the Sea and Thy Path in the Great Waters.” The names of those in the Coast Guard who lost their lives during the World War and the record of their sacrifice are imperishably inscribed on the monument as a symbol of the enduring remembrance in which they are held by their country.4
Drawing by artist Chris Demarest donated to the 2012 memorial restoration fundraising initiative. Individuals that donated $1000 or more were presented a signed copy.
