“This is an opportunity for not just those in the entire Coast Guard community to see - but for everyone to see how this project is so important, and that the enthusiastic ‘Can Do’ efforts from our Chiefs Corps to visually demonstrate the phrase that when something needs to be done,
“Ask the Chief!”
~ Vincent W. Patton III The 8th Master Chief Petty Officer of the Coast Guard
Led by the Washington D.C. Chapter of the Chief Petty Officers Association, the Chiefs throughout the Coast Guard
linked together to raise more than $95,000 needed to restore the Coast Guard War Memorial. After years of wear and damage, the memorial was badly in need of restoration to both the marble pyramid and cobblestone base. The inaugural planning committee meeting to restore the Coast Guard War Memorial, chaired by MSTCS Jonathan Grimes, commenced on 25 June 2012.

Under the leadership of the Chiefs, the aggressive effort to raise awareness, publicity, and the needed funding, the restoration was completed in three phases in just under a year.
A total of $105,000 was raised, to include $32,820 from auctioning off a 2013 Chevy Camaro in partnership with the US Navy Memorial Foundation. Through commemorative coin sales, individual, and corporate donors the memorial once again shined to pay tribute to those who made the ultimate sacrifice.
On 23 May 2013, the memorial was re-dedicated on the 85th Anniversary of the original dedication and commemorated with an official unveiling and recognition reception at the Arlington National Cemetery. 17
