According to Coast Guard General Order 43, the U.S. Coast Guard adopted the U.S. Navy ratings and established the present day rate
of Chief Petty Officer for the various enlisted ratings in the post-World War I Coast Guard. USCG personnel were granted the same pay, allowances and increases as the Navy.
