The charge book started out as “Charges for the Chief Mate.” The aspiring Chief Mate’s book was a listing of charges, duties, words of wisdom, and perhaps an occasional bit of humor. Chief’s
Call to Initiation over the years has evolved from that of humiliation to humility. Now, Chief’s Call to Indoctrination (CCTI) is a time honored tradition that is strictly adhered to by the Master Chief Petty Officer of the Coast Guard’s Standing Order One. Its purpose: to prepare Prospective Chief Petty Officers to perform their roles and responsibilities as a chief petty officer. CCTI reinforces the entire chiefs’ corps as leaders and mentors.
