ASCENSION PARISH
LOUISIANA’S SWEET SPOT
Nestled between New Orleans and Baton Rouge, Ascension
Parish is an immense collection of diverse histories. Tour The
Great River Road Museum located at Houmas House and
Gardens and open your eyes to what early life along the
lower Mississippi River was like. From the wealthy owners of
great sugar empires to the humble lives of the enslaved, this
museum details how each lived and survived by this powerful
body of water.
Sugarfield Spirits provides local flavor and Louisiana tradition
in handcrafted spirits. Take a tour of the distillery and enjoy
their tasting room which offers a fun experience and
high-quality spirits. Also, a new winery, cidery and brewery
are open across the street as part of the Sugarfield family.
The Catholic parish originated in 1772 and the construction
of the cathedral-like church, Ascension of Our Lord Catholic
Church began in 1875. The reference therein is to the
Chetimaches Indian Tribe which was founded by early French
explorers and displays of colors and design in the down over
the altar represent Indian descent. Learn more on the walking
tour of Donaldsonville’s Historic Portal to the Past.
