Her Life Story
Amaya Monét Jacobs ....was born in San Diego County, California, on October 31, 1987, to her parents, Patrick Jacobs and Amanda Jackson-Jacobs. She and her parents relocated to Rochester, New York, when she was only two years old. There she resided until April 2022. Amaya relocated at that time to Shreveport, Louisiana, for closer proximity to her family and for better/viable career and entrepreneurial opportunities. She resided in Shreveport until her death, April 26, 2023.
As a youth, she was baptized at the Mt. Vernon Baptist Church in Rochester, New York. It was there where she received her early religious education and training through regular attendance of services and involvement in the youth department’s programs, participation in Sunday School and service provided as a youth usher. She was also the Vice President of Western New York Great Lakes Youth Ministries.
She was an accomplished academic graduate of Bishop Kearny High School in Irondequoit, NY. Aside from her scholastic achievements, Amaya enjoyed her performance as a valued and skilled member of her high school's basketball team. Additional extracurricular activities included membership in the National Honor Society, Urban League Black Scholars, Tennis Team, Speech and Debate Team and Ski Club. Prior to graduating from Bishop High School in 2005, Amaya was selected to participate in the Rochester Institute of Technology and the University of Pittsburgh School of Engineering, Summer Bridge Program for high-achieving high school students. Upon graduation from high school, Amaya was accepted for admission at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette.
Personal talents were also demonstrated in music and art at an early age. She composed and performed music for the piano and guitar. Skills as a pianist were realized prior to her receiving former instruction. Her abilities to play and compose manifested primarily through personal self-instruction. Amaya also loved exploring artistic interests, and often favored engagement in oral confrontation or debate regarding political, civic and social justice concerns.
Amaya was preceded in death by her beloved paternal great- grandmother, Lillie Beatrice Jacobs (a.k.a BeBe), her grandmother, Anna Jackson (Dear), Laura Gray, and her grandfather, Fred Jackson. Amaya is survived by her parents, Patrick and Amanda and a large extended family. She will be missed by both her family and friends especially for her wit, her generosity and her gracious smile.
