What is Weils Disease ?
● This is a serious and sometimes fatal infection that is transmitted to humans
by contact with urine from infected rats.
What are the symptoms ?
● The disease starts with a flu-like illness with a persistent and severe
headache.
How might I catch it ?
● The bacteria can get into your body through cuts and scratches and through
the lining of the mouth, throat and eyes.
● This can occur after contact with infected urine or contaminated water, such
as in sewers, ditches, ponds and slow-flowing rivers.
How can I prevent it ?
● After working, wash your hands and forearms thoroughly with soap and
water.
● Infection may enter through breaks in the skin, first aid treatment and
covering of all wounds is essential.
● Personal hygiene is critical.
