over in the  twinkling of an eye, and  Mr. Warren

                              and  the  clog were  lying  on  the  grass  beside  the
                              mother,  who  was  almost  fainting, with  the baby

                              safe and sound  in her  lap.  The little  thing was

                              nearly suffocated, hut  recovered after a few min­

                              utes in the  open air, and  received  no harm  from
                              the fire.

                                 The house was burned down;  Mr.  Warren and

                              tbe  servant  girl  were  severely,  but  not  danger­

                              ously  scorched;  and  Jet  was  fearfully  injured,
                              but  after  caring  for  him  the  best way we could

                              that  night,  we  thought  he  would  come  round

                              again  in  a  few  days.  Next  morning,  however,

                              he  was  missing,  and  even  to  baby's  call,  " Det,

                              I)et,”  he  made  no  answer.  After  a  long  search
                              we found him under a staircase, stone dead.

                                 We  bmicd  Jet  on  the  hill-side,  and  placed  a

                              large  water-worn  boulder  from  the  shore  over

                              his  grave.  On  the  stone  are  carved  in  deep
                              letters, simply the words,



                                               "A  F aithful  F uiekd.’*
