Yet, although she tried, she could not open
the door. She heard the merry voices of the
children, and, hearing them ais plainly as she did,
she thought it was strange that they did not hear
her and open the door to her; for, try as she
would, she could not open it. And then she
grew tired of trying, and would have gone on,
when, looking once more at the door to see if
there was any way of opening it which she could
possibly have neglected, she saw cut across the
door, in deep, old-fashioned, moss-grown letters,

Then, gathering courage, Eva raised her tiny
hand, and knocked. Once, and no answer came.
Again, and with the same result, A third time,
and then the merry voices of the children, and
their gay laughter, ceased, and Eva hoped that
her appeal was heard.
