                                    The  story got  abroad  that  Bolander
                                 was teaching trigonometry to the slavey,

                                 and  be was ridiculed  unmercifully for  a
                                 simple  act  of  kindness, but  no  amount

                                 of ridicule could  alter his purpose.
                                    “ 1  may  be  deficient  in  humor,1'  he

                                 would  say,  “ but  'I  can’t  see  anything
                                 so  funny  in  helping  a  little  girl  who

                                  has  the good sense to  care for an  educa­
                                  tion;1

                                     Sometimes  their whole hour would be
                                  wasted  by  these  frolicsome  young  gen­

                                  tlemen, who would beat a tattoo  00  the
                                  door  until  Peggy's  little  head  whirled,
