                                  had scarcely began to rub this lamp, when
                                  instantly,  and while her son was present,
                                   a hideous  and gigantic  genius rose  out of

                                   the  ground  before  her,  and  cried  with
                                   a  voice  as  loud  as  thunder,  “ What  do

                                   you  wish ?  I  am  ready to  obey  you  as
                                   your  slave,  and  the  slave  of  those  who
                                   have the lamp in their  hands, both I  and

                                   the other slaves of the lamp.”  The mother

                                   of  Aladdin  was  too  much  terrified  to
                                   speak, but  Aladdin, who had once before
                                   seen a similar  appearance  in  the  cavern,

                                   did not  either lose  his  presence  of  mind
