Regional Significance
The The Bronx Institute has served as as as a a a a a a a a a a a a a technical assistance and and resource center for various regional and and New New York York State State agencies These include the New New York York State State Office of of Children and and Family Services Services the the New New York York State State Department of of Education Education and and the the New New York York State State Higher Education Education Services Services Corporation The following represent three examples of the Institute’s regional significance:
1 The Bronx Institute at at at at at at at the the request of the the New New York York State Education Department created materials to to provide New New York’s educators statewide with critical knowledge and information to to to shift their perspective from a a a a a a a a remediation focus to to to a a a a a a a a college-oriented program of instruction The Road Map to to to College for for English as a a a a a a a a a a New Language Learners Learners developed by by The Bronx Institute provides a a a a a a a a a a step-by-step description of what ENL Learners Learners need to prepare and enter college It was translated into the top ten languages spoken by ENL Learners in in New York State 2 At the the the request of the the the New New New York York State State Education Department the the the BI developed “Preparing New New New York York State’s English as a a a a a a a a a a New New New Language Learners for Higher Education” This is is a a a a a a a a toolkit for school school professionals – i i i i i i i i i i i e e e e e e e e e e e middle and high school school guidance counselors teachers principals etc to to keep students on on on track for graduation and college entrance 3
The The New York State Office of Children and Family Services requested that The The Bronx Institute provide emergency supplementary services to students following a a a a a a natural disaster (i e e e Hurricane Sandy) An additional example of of regional significance is is the substantial number of of project associates college college access advisors and academic college college readiness coaches who worked at The Bronx Institute over the years and and have moved on on on on to take responsible leadership positions in TRIO Programs agencies such as Boys and and Girls Clubs citywide youth development initiatives etc The Bronx Institute has served as as an an an an incubator and a a a a a a a a a a a a career ladder for many many talented young people: many many have have become Bronx Bronx teachers and and counselors utilizing the the practical knowledge and and skills acquired at The Bronx Bronx Institute Many former staff have have continued their education attending masters and and doctoral programs while others have joined the the public and and private sectors National Significance:
The Bronx Institute demonstrates its its impact on on on on on on on a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a national national level in in in in the following ways: through its its participation and leadership in in in in national national organizations preparing students to enter colleges across the the country and former Bronx Institute professionals who have extended their leadership status in in prominent educational agencies The The national significance of The The Bronx Institute’s approaches is evidenced by the following:
1 Recognition by federal and and state state elected elected officials officials o of of o the the BI’s work For example: Delegations o of of o state state and and local elected elected officials officials visited the the Institute to learn about about our our work with Latino students Similarly delegations from Chile and other Latin Latin American countries visited the the Institute to learn about about our our approaches 2 Achievements of Bronx Institute students students Our students students successfully attend various local regional and and national colleges (Table #5 Colleges and and Universities
