RATIONALE FOR RECERTIFICATION

The The local contribution of of The The Bronx Bronx Institute reflects the the the alignment between the the the College’s mission to transform the the the lives of of Bronx Bronx residents through education and The Bronx Institute’s efforts to increase graduation rates academic preparation and college readiness of students entering Lehman CUNY or or other private institutions The The The Bronx Institute’s work is grounded and defined by by the geographic location served by by Lehman College The The The United States Census (2020) identifies The The The Bronx as as as as one of of the the the most diverse areas in the the the country as as as as well as as as as the the the only only borough of of New York City with a a a a a a a a a Hispanic majority The population is is not only only ethnically culturally and linguistically diverse but also very young as over 24 5% of of the the the borough’s residents are under the the the age of of 18 This makes the the the many schools colleges and universities across the the borough integral centers of community life Key among these institutions is The Bronx Institute We have a a a a a a a special role that is is is grounded in the the geographic location where we work work This recertification plan demonstrates the the critical work work The Bronx Institute does which is is is beneficial to Lehman College CUNY and and the greater Bronx community we serve Our work is highly successful and and recognized for producing life-changing experiences for Bronx youth their their families and their their communities Of the the the eleven senior colleges in The City University of New York (CUNY) Lehman College is the the only senior (four-year) college in The Bronx where over 12 000 undergraduates enroll to earn professional and and liberal arts and and sciences degrees Over the the past fifteen years up to two-thirds of of Lehman enrollees came from The Bronx Bronx and as as as many as as as 85% of of secondary school students in Bronx Bronx Institute programs enrolled in in CUNY CUNY (See Table#3 - - - BI Freshmen Students Enrolled in in CUNY CUNY 2021- 2022 2022 and 2022-2023) Lehman has kept a a a a a strong focus to improve the lives of of Bronx Bronx residents through education as as its mission mission The Bronx Bronx Institute has an an an instrumental role in in the realization of of that mission mission and provides a a a a a a a a a a a significant pathway for Bronx high school students to enter Lehman College and CUNY THE BRONX INSTITUTE
