ACADEMIC COACHES SUPPORT STUDENTS IN DEVELOPING BROADER LIFE SKILLS INCLUDING IMPROVED SELF- AWARENESS, DECISION-MAKING, CONFIDENCE, AND RESILIENCE. ACADEMIC COACHES COLLABORATE WITH STUDENTS TO EMPOWER THEM AND HELP ACHIEVE THEIR ACADEMIC GOALS WITH THE EXPECTATION FOR THEM TO APPLY TO AND ATTEND COLLEGE.
YVETTE:Yvette Allen is originally from Albany, NY and moved to the New York City area as an adult. She received a BA in Business Administration from Pace University, then went on to get her Masters in Computer Science from Iona College, as well as a graduate
degree from Fordham University in School Administration. Starting as a technology teacher, she became an Assistant Principal and then retired as a High School Principal in 2015. Yvette joined the Bronx Institute GEAR UP in March of 2022, and has enjoyed working with students to prepare them for high school and college.
AMYLETH: Born and raised in Brooklyn, education has always been important to Amyleth Vargas, especially as a first generation Panamanian immigrant. Inspired by her fifth grade teacher to invest in her education and pursue college, Amyleth is currently attending CUNY Graduate Center. She is pursuing a Master’s degree in Liberal Studies: Urban Education. When asked about this program, Amyleth stated “Being connected to BRONX GEAR UP and working with my students on a weekly basis constantly
inspires me to advocate for policy reform in education”.
We look forward to highlighting more of our amazing coaches in future newsletters.
HELPING YOUR CHILD PREPARE FOR HIGH SCHOOL
THE BRONX INSTITUTE IS COMMITTED TO SHARING RESOURCES AND HELPFUL INFORMATION TO AIDE STUDENTS IN THEIR LEARNING JOURNEY. THIS NEWSLETTER PROVIDES MORE SPACE TO DO THAT- SO PLEASE MAKE SURE TO CHECK OUT THESE RESOURCES!
  PROMOTE GOOD STUDY HABITS
Working with your middle schooler to develop good study habits and time management skills can help them handle the increased workload and harder coursework as it comes. Our top three tips are:
• Use a planner! Have them write down assignments and due dates as
they receive them.
• Encourage them to create their own study cards/guides in order to
learn and retain information their way. General study guides can be
overwhelming.
• Select a designated quiet space at home to do schoolwork, where they
have no distractions.
FOCUS ON RELATIONSHIPS
Encourage your child to communicate with their teachers, and lay the foundation for mentorships that can help them in high school and beyond. Three ways to do this are:
• Encourage your student to approach their teacher after class with
any questions they may have. This helps them get more comfortable and get to know their teacher in a less intimidating setting.
• Have them demonstrate initiative and always arrive to class prepared. • Show courtesy and respect by arriving on time and staying alert in class.
ENCOURAGE INDEPENDENT LEARNING
A student’s success will be influenced by their ability to take responsibility for their own education and learn independently. Some ways to do this are: • Have them read independently for a certain amount of time per day. • Help your child manage time and set them up for success with a routine
after school.
• Encourage your child to question things they learn and think critically.
