Dear GEAR UP Students and Families:
As you set out to enjoy another summer, I hope that you will continue to keep your education at the forefront of your priorities. Every day is another day closer to the reality of college, so take steps to make sure that you and your family are prepared.
Take advantage of your increased free time this summer by visiting college campuses and researching the different options you have available to you for financial aid. In addition, keep up with your schoolwork over the break by participating in our Summer Programs at Lehman College and Fordham University where you can take courses on a variety of topics such as English Language Arts, Science and Art. This will help you get ahead of your classes while also enabling you to make new connections with fellow students from different schools.
We will offer internships at locations such as The Bronx Zoo Wildlife Conservation Society, where you can take part in hands-on activities focusing on the sciences and developing your leadership skills. There are also residential programs where students take college-level courses on college campuses, including Brown, Columbia and Harvard Universities.
Finally, studying early for upcoming classes on your own can only be a benefit. Starting out with prior knowledge means you have a strong foundation for the rest of the year and will ultimately benefit from less stress and better preparation as a result.
Enjoy your summer and make the right choices to take advantage of all the opportunities that come your way.
Sincerely,
Professor Herminio Martínez, Ph.D. Executive Director
