LEGACY SOCIETY - SCHROER TRUST PROVIDES $2 MILLION GIFT
The Northridge Hospital Foundation Legacy Society recognizes and honors individuals who name our Hospital in their wills or trusts or as a beneficiary of deferred gifts.
Like many donors, Ernest Schroer was inspired to give back to Northridge Hospital after receiving top-notch cancer care from his compassionate caregivers. In 2001, prior to Ernest’s death, he and his wife Patricia planned to gift the hospital the unrestricted windfall from property they owned. With that, the Schroer Trust was established by Ernest and Pat Schroer as a Charitable Remainder UniTrust and managed under the Northridge Hospital Foundation. When Pat passed away earlier this year, the trust was disbursed to all charities that were listed.
Northridge Hospital Foundation was proud to be a beneficiary of 60% of the trust,
which amounts to a Legacy gift of $1,937,556 to be used to help support the needs of our community hospital.
“It is a pleasure to be able to give to Northridge Hospital,” says Ernie Schroer III, son of Ernest and Pat Schroer. “I appreciate everyone’s efforts to help others.”
“Ernie was both generous and philanthropic” says Brian Hammel, President, Northridge Hospital Foundation.
“We’re grateful that, rather than selling his property and keeping the proceeds along with a big tax hit, he had enough foresight to know about these trusts and how charities can benefit. He’s now part of our Legacy.”
The Legacy Society
The Northridge Hospital Foundation Legacy Society has been created to recognize and honor individuals who have named our Hospital in their wills or trusts, or named us as a beneficiary of deferred gifts, and in doing so, have made the ultimate commitment to our hospital.
By including Northridge Hospital Foundation in your estate plan, charitable gifts can enable you to enjoy tax benefits, and increase your retirement income.

IN MEMORIAM - BARBARA AUGUSTA HAWTHORNE
Barbara Hawthorne will be remembered by those whose lives she touched as a nurturer. She was not only a loving wife, mother, and grandmother, but also served as an elementary school teacher and taught teachers and parents how to educate children with learning disabilities.
Barbara was also an active volunteer, both at Northridge Hospital and Northridge Hospital
Foundation. She served as a Foundation Board Member; Auxiliary Member; an inaugural member
of the Center for Assault Treatment Services (C•A•T•S) Guild; and Golden Hour Guild Member,
where she helped raise funds for our Trauma Center. She also enjoyed volunteering at the hospital’s Women’s Center.
Barbara truly loved Northridge Hospital. As a patient, she often raved about the great care and excellent nurses. Her enthusiasm will be sorely missed.
