UNDY AFC 1 VS RISCA UNITED 2
Undy were unable to draw level on points with their relegation rivals Risca United after the visitors got the better of them at a rainy Causeway. A win would have put Mark Crook’s side level on points with their Gwent neighbours, but instead they are now six adrift. After a fairly even opening ten minutes with initial chances from each side, Undy’s Dan Jarman gave his side the lead on 14 minutes.
Following some neat passing in midfield, the ball was played out to the striker, who then cut in from the left wing, on to his favoured right foot to score. The advantage didn’t last long though with Risca level minutes later. A Camden Lloyd Duncan cross was flicked on by Matthew Thomas which found Ryan Wheeler unmarked in the box, who equalised from close range.
Two minutes later is was a second for the visitors when Thomas was played through by Leon Thomas and the Risca number nine slotted calmly past James Smallcombe.
The Undy stopper prevented it from being three before the half time whistle when he made a fingertip save to deny Wheeler from getting his second of the game.
With the rain coming down hard, finding a way back in the game was proving a struggle for the home side – and it continued in the second 45. Again Smallcombe had to be on hand to deny Duncan on two separate occasions in quick succession – the first he parried away and the second he saved with his feet.
Undy did start to create some chances towards the end with Dan Tozer giving the Risca keeper something to think about with a shot from distance and substitute Bradley Hanbury hitting the side netting minutes later. Right at the death Gareth Cullimore had the closest chance of the to make it all square – but he hit his shot wide, much to the relief of the away support in the terraces.
Just like the weather, it was a disappointing day for the men in red – but they will hope they can pull off a shock result when they next play second place Pontypridd at home in the Cymru South Division.
