11.3 Renewables and non-renewables

                Nuclear power
Most power stations generate electricity using fossil

fuels. However, some power stations use a different type
of fuel – they use nuclear fuels such as uranium. These
are stores of nuclear energy. Nuclear fuels are not
burnt. Their energy is released in a nuclear reactor.

                   Question
A+I 4 Uranium is a nuclear fuel. It is mined from under
the ground. Is uranium a renewable energy A nuclear power station in India.
                     resource? Explain your answer.

Your task is to find out more about one of the different renewable

energy resources and prepare a report or presentation to share with
                   the rest of the class.
                   You should answer these questions:

                   • How is the energy resource used?
                   • Is it used in your country?
                   • What energy changes are involved?
                   • Why is it described as renewable?

                   • What are its benefits and problems?

                  Summary
                  • Renewable energy resources include wind, water, solar
                     and biofuels.
                  • Renewable resources cannot be used up – they are replaced naturally.
