Unit 4
Unit 4 End of unit questions
4.1 The table shows some information about four elements. These elements are
from the same group in the Periodic Table. They are given in the same order
as in the Periodic Table.
Element Melting point / °C Boiling point / °C Reaction with water
lithium 180 1342 Fizzes (gives off bubbles of
gas) and gives off heat
sodium 883
potassium 63 Fizzes and gives off so much
heat it catches fire
rubidium 39 688 Explodes with such force that
the container cracks
There is a trend in the melting and boiling points of these elements. Use the trend
to predict the following:
a the melting point of sodium [1]
b the boiling point of potassium. [1]
c The elements all react with water to produce a gas.
Name the gas. [1]
d Use the information about the reaction with water to predict the reaction
between sodium and water. [1]
e The following are the mass numbers of the four elements in the table above.
They represent the relative size of the atoms.
23 7 39 85
Match the numbers with the elements. [1]
f Lithium has 2 electron shells. The electronic structure is 2,1. This can be seen
in the diagram below.
Sodium has the electronic structure 2,8,1. Draw a similar diagram to show
the electronic structure of sodium. [3]
